On 15th June the MEDMIG team held a policy roundtable at the European Commission, Athens, Greece at which the preliminary findings of the research on the Eastern Mediterranean Route (Turkey to Greece) were presented to around 50 policy makers, politicians, embassy staff, civil society organisations, academics and practitioners.
The event was chaired by Dr Dia Anagnostou (ELIAMEP) with presentations from Professor Heaven Crawley and Dr Katharine Jones. Vasilios Papadopoulos, General Secretary for Migration Policy, Ministry of Interior and Administrative Reconstruction provided an update on the current situation in Greece, noting in particular the changing situation since the implementation of the EU-Turkey agreement on 20th March 2016. This was followed by a discussion of the policy implications of the research which was led by responses from Lefteris Papagiannakis, Deputy Mayor for Migration, Municipality of Athens, Kalliope Stefanaki, Protection Officer, UNHCR Greece and Apostolos Veizis, Head of Medical Operational Support Unit, MSF Greece.
